Soul and R&B, a musical art form derived from the blues, gospel and other types of music which could be easily linked back to the time of slavery. I reference ‘Black America ‘because origin is important. This music found its way from the cotton fields to the slums and on its journey and evolution, it gained in popularity with young ‘White America’. They tried to duplicate it and often failed but every now and then a white artist, producer and/or writer who truly embraced the music was able to contribute material which was every bit as good as those of their Black counter-parts. From Elvis to Leiber & Stoller, to Phil Spector’s Righteous Brothers who became synonymous with the term “Blue Eyed Soul”. This episode covers roughly 40 years of contributions made by White artists to this beloved genre of music. Taking the lead from those that came before them; they were able to successfully give us a lighter and meaningful shade of soul.

This is a vinyl assortment of some of the Jazz-Soul-Funk-Disco period of the mid to late 70’s. These gems are prized pieces of the “collection” which you will hear more of in the weeks and months to come. So puff up that fro and lace up the platforms for the hippest trip this side of a Friday night.

Another DJ mix experience from the DJ Rhythm Dee archives.
Sourced from my original mix tapes from the past.

Let’s go back into time.

1989 a time when Arsenio Hall was king, high top fades, polka dot shirts, bicycle shorts with leather jackets. How about Cross Colours, and Cosby sweaters. Batman returns to the big screen and we couldn’t get enough of Do the Right Thing.

This mix features, Public Enemy, Eric B & Rakim, Heavy D & the Boyz, Queen Latifah, De La Soul, Maestro Fresh Wes and many, many more.

On a day that we mourn the loss of the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin we celebrate one of the great songstresses to follow the path.

In this episode we delve into the life and music of Chaka Khan. BMS will take you from her roots in South Side Chicago, to her time with the legendary Funk/Soul/Jazz ensemble known as Rufus. Chaka literally gave her soul to the music business and paid a heavy price. She continues to record as well as serve as an inspiration for many artists.

Join me as we take you through the fire that is Chaka Khan.
